EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Students from the Texas Tech Huckabee College of Architecture will present their vision of how the Duranguito neighborhood in Downtown El Paso could be redesigned on Friday afternoon on May 3, 2024.  The students will be expanding on the original vision by neighborhood residents and the community that was contemplated through the Plan for the Rebirth of Duranguito a few years ago.  That original vision incorporated new low-income housing, museums and cultural spaces that could attract visitors to learn of the neighborhood’s history.  David Romo, member of Project Regeneracion (Regeneration), says this new vision being presented on Friday will be adding to the community's input.    “The students have done incredible work. Many of them have really poured their heart and soul. The questions that they're asking is, 'How do we do both? How do we start with a project that is generated by the community that serves the community, but also it's a way of preserving history and framing it in ways that are cutting edge?'” Romo said.  The presentation will be free and open to the public starting at 5:30 p.m. on the 17th floor of the Blue Fame Building, located at 304 Texas Ave. Romo said this is an ongoing process, and that they encourage more input from the community so that everyone can be part of the restoration of Duranguito. “We want Duranguito to be a model not only for our city, but for our country of what truly community-generated energy can do for a space. We fought long and hard to stop the bulldozers. Now we want to show what can be done with this neighborhood,” Romo said.
