WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) released body-worn camera footage from an officer who shot and killed two dogs in the Petworth neighborhood on April 25. At about 1:45 p.m. that day, the officer responded to a possible stabbing in the 3600 block of 11th St. NW. The officer got there and saw a broken window in the basement of the home. MPD said the officer knocked on the front door, but no one answered. The officer walked to a nearby alleyway. Officer shoots, kills 2 dogs in Northwest DC Several dogs were barking as the officer entered the alley. The dogs' barking can be heard on the recording from the officer's body-worn camera which also shows a dog suddenly pushing through a gate and running towards the officer. Two more dogs followed. The officer fired three rounds at the dogs and hit two of them. They both died at the scene. In a statement, MPD said the footage was released to the community in compliance with the Secure DC Ominubus Emergency Amendment Act, which was passed in March. The act requires that MPD brief the community on shootings involving animals. MPD's Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating the incident. Any evidence and facts also will be reviewed by the Use of Force Review Board to determine if the use of force was within policy, officials said in the statement.
