HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) -- La Super Liga a soccer league for Latino adults in Holyoke kicked off their first game Sunday morning. The league aims to strengthen the community by bringing everyone together to watch the teams play soccer. Families were watching the team play, while children across the field played their own mini soccer games, cheered on the team and embraced the Latin culture. Ruben Castillo, a referee for La Super Liga says that the league took a break a few years but they finally made their return and the community was there to show support, "It is very important that we bring the family, kids, we all get together, get to know each other's different cultures. I am Peruvian. There is a lot from Central America here, Mexicans, Guatemalans, Salvadorians, so it's great and you get to taste all the food as well." On Sunday morning, Holyoke Mayor Joshua Garcia had the honorary first kick to get the games going for the day. There will be more than 22 weeks of games so if you didn't get a chance to go, La Super Liga has games every Sunday starting at 9 a.m. Kiara Smith is a reporter who has been a part of the 22News team since March 2023.
