According to the National Day Calendar, the blueberry harvest begins in April and lasts until September, which gives us a long and full blueberry season. Blueberry pies have been enjoyed since the early American settlers arrived. In 1872, the first documented recipe for blueberry pie appeared in the Appledore Cook Book.
Blueberries are actually abundant in Maine, which is why blueberry pie is the state's official dessert. These berries pack a punch in vitamins and health benefits from farm to table or farmer to grocer to you. They make a great snack all on their own or they can enhance a meal, or make stellar desserts, or sauces. It is one of the healthiest fruits on the market as well.
