There is buzz and excitement in the high school swimming world, as for the first time the CIF Southern Section Championships will take place at Mt. San Antonio College’s state-of-the-art aquatics complex. Fast times are expected and records could fall when the best swimmers in Southern California converge in Walnut this week. The action starts Tuesday morning with the Division 4 preliminaries at 9 a.m. The Division 3 prelims are scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday, with the Division 2 prelims scheduled to follow at 4 p.m. The Division 1 prelims begin Thursday at 9 a.m. The Division 4 finals will begin Thursday at 4 p.m. The Division 3 finals are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, with the Division 2 finals scheduled to follow at 3 p.m. Action wraps up Saturday afternoon with the Division 1 finals at noon. Tickets for each session: $12 adults; $5 students and children. Parking is $10 each day and is cash only. Here is a closer look a the Inland area’s top boys and girls swimmers to watch at this year’s section championships. (File photo by Terry Pierson, The Press-Enterprise/SCNG) DIVISION 1 It has been 10 years since an Inland swimmer claimed a Division 1 championship (Redlands’ Kyle Gornay) and 18 years since an Inland girls swimmer achieved the feat (Yucaipa’s Jessie Perazzo). Riverside Poly’s Ava DeAnda looks to end the area’s drought. DeAnda won Division 2 titles in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyles, as well as the CIF State title in 100 freestyle as a freshman last season. She is the No. 1 seed in the 100 freestyle this year and the No. 3 seed in the 200 freestyle. Should DeAnda prevail, she would become the first Riverside County swimmer to win in the highest division since 1987 (Moreno Valley’s Sara Anderson). Santiago junior Brinley Knoll enters as the No. 4 seed in the girls 100 breaststroke and No. 6 seed in the 200 individual medley. One of Knoll’s teammate, freshman Charlotte Milkie, is seeded sixth in the 200 freestyle and eighth in the 100 freestyle. Daniel Cao of Los Osos is the highest seed among Inland boys swimmers in Division 1 this year: No. 8 in the 100 breaststroke. (Photo by Terry Pierson, The Press-Enterprise/SCNG) DIVISION 2 Ayala junior Daniel Benson is the No. 1 seed in the boys 100 and 200 freestyles, but he could be challenged by Murrieta Valley sophomore Kaleb Richmond, who is the No. 2 seed in both events. Ayala has never had a boys swimmer win an individual title. Arthur Lin, another junior from Ayala, is the No. 3-seeded swimmer in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. Benson and Lin also are expected to swim legs on Ayala’s 200 medley relay (No. 1 seed) and 200 freestyle relay (No. 2 seed). Murrieta Mesa senior Ty Schneider is the No. 1 seed in the 100 breaststroke and the No. 6 seed in the 200 individual medley. Redlands sophomore Maksim Kutsner is the No. 4 seed in the 100 backstroke, while Alta Loma’s Luke Marsden is the No. 5 seed in the 100 breaststroke. Marsden also will swim on Alta Loma’s 200 medley relay, which is seeded fifth. Chino Hills is seeded third in the 400 freestyle relay. On the girls side, Citrus Valley senor Hayley Smith is the No. 2 seed in the 500 freestyle and the No. 3 seed in the 200 freestyle. King senior Angelica Benitez is the top seed in the 100 breaststroke, and freshman Alyssa Bian is seeded third in the 100 butterfly and sixth in the 200 individual medley. Benitez and Bian also will swim on King’s medley relay team, which is seeded second. Upland senior Spencer Damaske won a Division 3 title last year in the 100 butterfly and also placed second in the 200 freestyle. This season, for the Division 2 finals, Damaske in the No. 5 seed in the 200 freestyle and No. 6 seed in the 100 breaststroke. In the 100 backstroke, Murrieta Valley sophomore Kaitlyn Lee and Vista Murrieta senior Emma Steffens are seeded third and fourth, respectively. Hemet sophomore Jayden Godbolt is the No. 2 seed in the 50 freestyle and the No. 3 seed in the 100 backstroke. Liberty sophomore Gwen Asbury is seeded second in the 500 freestyle and fourth in the 200 freestyle. Chaparral senior Natalia Ferrette is the No. 2 seed in the 100 butterfly, while Temescal Canyon sophomore Chloe Rivers is seeded second in the 100 breaststroke. Temecula Valley sophomore Maya Cravens is the No. 4 seed in the 200 IM. Rancho Cucamonga sophomore Audrey Lee is seeded fourth in the 100 breaststroke and also will swim on Rancho Cucamonga’s medley relay, which is seeded third. Corona junior Autumn Moya is the No. 5 seed in the 500 freestyle. On the boys side, Yucaipa freshman Hunter Tamura is the No. 3 seed in the 200 and 500 freestyles. Chaparral senior David Toschuk is seeded second in the 100 butterfly, and he also will swim legs on Chaparral’s 200 freestyle relay (No. 2 seed) and medley relay (No. 4 seed). Great Oak freshman Alexander Hernandez is the No. 4 seed in the 100 butterfly and will swim on Great Oak’s top-seeded 400 freestyle relay. Bonita is seeded third in the 200 free relay and fourth in the 400 free relay. McAleer heads into this year’s championship as the No. 2 seed in the butterfly and No. 8 seed in the 100 free. Redlands Adventist Academy senior Anton Zivanovic is the No. 4 seed in the 50 and 100 freestyles. Webb junior Erik Sun is the seeded fourth in the 100 backstroke. Paloma Valley is the No. 2 seed in the 200 freestyle relay and No. 3 seed in the 400 free relay, while Ramona is seeded fourth in the medley relay. Valley View and San Dimas are seeded fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 400 free relay. On the girls side, St. Jeanne de Lestonnac senior Amelia Vorndam is seeded third in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 50 freestyle. Fontana junior Brooklyn Green is the No. 3 seed in the 50 freestyle. Patriot junior Emy Vazquez is seeded fourth in the 500 freestyle and fifth in the 200 freestyle. Ramona and Arlington are seeded fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200 freestyle relay. Orange Vista is the No. 2 seed in the medley relay.
