SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- April is Child Abuse Awareness Month, and for the past 12 years, a family has been trying to raise awareness after their child was abused by his daycare provider. Runners and walkers gathered for the Annual Henry's Run. "Henry's run is an incredible event that is created to bring awareness to child abuse prevention. And so we want to bring as many people in the community together to raise awareness about this really important event that was created by Henry's mom after Henry was injured at the hands of his daycare provider," Henry's Run Organizational Committee Kelly Wharton said. And while the event started because of a tragedy, it's now something the family looks forward to. "Oh, man, we get so excited about it every year. It's super fun just to see how Henry's story hasn't been forgotten and the community comes together and it's still super important to everyone," Henry & Marissa Johnson said. Tornado damage in Nebraska and Iowa Friday And while people love the competitive aspect of the 5K, they keep coming back for the family. "And we've known their family, the Johnsons, and we've known Henry a long time, and we've continued to come out here and support them," runner Topher Cisar said. As the community comes together to try to solve a preventable issue. "Child abuse is an adult problem. We need people to be aware of that. And it's a ripple effect. Everybody who comes here learns a little more about child abuse prevention," Child's Voice Medical Director Dr. Nancy Free said. "Just raise as much awareness as we can, what happened to Henry is 100% preventable. And we just want to make sure that that doesn't happen to any other baby or any other child. Like we've come a long way and Henry has come a long way. And as you can see, he's super happy. Happy Henry. He's our jokester," Marissa said.
