Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports Here’s how Lions fans and analysts reacted to Detroit selecting Ennis Rakestraw in the second round. The Detroit Lions selected Missouri cornerback Ennis Rakestraw with the 61st overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. It was the Lions’ first pick on Day 2 of the draft, and also their last of the day, barring Brad Holmes trading back up into the third round. That leaves the Lions with two new corners after two picks so far in the draft. Instant reactions on X were eager about Rakestraw’s upside, especially after he became a hot name mocked to the Lions in February: The Lions have landed two absolute dawgs at corner so far. Whew.— Field Yates (@FieldYates) April 27, 2024 I like it.— morgan cannon (@MCannon313) April 27, 2024 Some were quick to point out that the Lions might have gotten themselves a steal, as Rakestraw’s middling combine performance happened while nursing a groin injury: A Brad Holmes special! Rakeshaw should’ve went earlier. He fell imo due to the groin injury. Great pickup!— Jerry (NFL Lions) (@JerryMalloryNFL) April 27, 2024 The common denominator, though, was a focus on just how crowded the defensive backs room is now: I am so excited for these DB training camp battles lol— Alex Reno (@alex_reno) April 27, 2024 That depth chart is looking sick. They did tell us that Brian Branch was going to see “some” safety this year. https://t.co/IxhuLcbKf9— Dan Miller (@DanMillerFox2) April 27, 2024 I think Rakestraw is largely a backup in 2024. Arnold challenges for CB2 with Robertson, loser plays nickel on downs when Branch moves to safety, perhaps for three-safety sets.— John Whiticar (@Whiticar) April 27, 2024 Lions first round pick Terrion Arnold doesn’t seem to mind the crowded room: Detroit getting ready to be DBU let’s go!@EnnisRakestraw— Terrion “ ℍ " Arnold (@ArnoldTerrion) April 27, 2024 There was also a great point about the implications on Carlton Davis’ future with the Lions beyond this season: Pretty much confirms Carlton Davis is a 1 year rental. Rakestraw & Arnold are your #Lions CB duo of the future. https://t.co/1zaNtGdbkO— Bird's Eye Football (@BirdsEyeFball) April 27, 2024 Arnold and Rakestraw are interesting picks, fairly similar play styles. I guess it’s insurance for Davis leaving in free agency.Don’t love the pick, but the Lions need youth at CB.— John Whiticar (@Whiticar) April 27, 2024 Here’s the Lions’ war room reaction, with everyone donning savage sweatshirts: got some new Draft Room swag this year pic.twitter.com/30rsK3PALs— Detroit Lions (@Lions) April 27, 2024 Lastly, here’s how the massive crowd down in Campus Martius reacted to the Lions’ second-round pick: Lions pick Ennis Rakestraw Jr. for the #NFLDraft : @Hayley__Harding and @kaymanwhaley pic.twitter.com/lFtmiUz6pH— The Detroit News (@detroitnews) April 27, 2024 No doubt Rakestraw isn’t a flawless prospect, hence why the Lions got him at 61st overall. However, he brings a lot of attitude and more upside to a very crowded DBs room that will sort itself out in due time. If one thing is guaranteed, it’s that the Lions’ secondary will look much different in 2024 than it did in 2023.
