FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) -- One day after the driver was found guilty in a crash that killed two Oakton High School students, the jury convened once more for his sentencing hearing. On Thursday, the jury deliberated what sentence Usman Shahid will face. He was charged with two counts of manslaughter for a crash in 2022 that killed Ada Martinez Nolasco and Leeyan Yan. Police said that Shahid was driving over 80 mph when he lost control of his car, hitting another car and three pedestrians, including Nolasco and Yan. They died at the hospital. The third pedestrian survived. Driver found guilty in crash that killed Oakton High School students Nolasco's mother took the stand first on Thursday, telling the courtroom through tears about the felt since her daughter was killed. "She’ll never find happiness in her soul again. A mother could never imagine her child to be taken away. A mother who has a child in prison can go see him, that’s one thing, but I’ll never see my daughter again," her mother said. Yan's dad took the stand and described his daughter as "a genius who could make anything funny." He said her death "took the colors from our eyes, the smell of flowers from our noses, and the taste of food from our mouths." Shahid took the stand last, telling the courtroom tearfully that he was deeply sorry for his actions and the pain he caused the victims. He said he was in "full regret with the actions he’s done." Montgomery County police arrest man for deadly hit-and-run Several of Shahid's friends took the stand as well, with one of them urging the jury to "see the Usman I know" while describing him as "one of the best people I’ve ever met." Prosecutors told jurors that they had spoken with the victims' families, who "all agree he doesn’t need to be sentenced to the max" and recommended a sentence that's "enough time to be a measurement of the crime he committed, but not to match the pain because that sentence would be infinite." The maximum sentence is 10 years in prison for each count. As of 4:45 p.m., the jury had returned home for the night. Deliberations were scheduled to continue on Friday morning.
