EWING — You can never be quite sure what you are going to get out of the Hightstown High School softball team. The Rams can definitely pitch with Kady Olsen and they are very productive at the top half of their batting order, but fielding can be an issue at times. Sure enough, both the good and not so good were on display in a 7-5 victory over Ewing Thursday that could very well result in Hightstown getting either a fifth or sixth seed for the Mercer County Tournament. Which of those seeds it will be probably depends on whether Hun enters the MCT this year. Handing Ewing just its third loss of the season, Hightstown (7-4) appeared to have everything under control when it stormed out to a 7-1 lead in the third inning RBI singles by Julia Luczak and Adriana Cepeda got two runs home in the first and the Rams then scored five in a third inning in which it had three hits and Ewing had its own fielding woes with three errors. The hits in that uprising were a crushed double by Olsen and singles by Hayden Bustos and Luczak, who had two hits along with Seton Hall-bound senior Angelina Benitez and Olsen. At this point it looked like it was going to be a really long day for Ewing pitcher Abby Singer, but to her credit she really settled down to allow only one hit in the next four innings and strike out the side in the seventh. Olsen finished with a four-hitter and 10 strikeouts. The fact Ewing got back in the game was in large part not her fault as  Hightstown committed five errors. In the second, Ewing scored on a crushed double by Emily Gamboa-Ordini and a throwing error. The Hightsown defense then really had its problems in the fourth inning when it committed three errors and Ewing scored four runs to make the score 7-5. Abby Mahan got Ewing going in the fourth with a double and then Morgan Dwyer singled in the hole. Afyer an error allowed a run to score, Hightstown got a great diving catch in center field by by Olivia Pignatello. It was only a temporary reprieve, however, because No. 2 batter Valeria Velez showed she’s got some pop in her diminutive frame with a hard two-run double. Another run then scored on two more Hightstown errors. While it wasn’t pretty, the bottom line is Hightstown did get the job done. If it can just clean up its fielding it can be a tough out for just about anyone. The Rams have played some very quality softball this year, but they also give up 17 runs against Princeton and got run ruled when they made five errors in the last inning against Bordentown. “We can definitely hit and we have a great pitcher,” said Hightstown coach Tom Meneskie. “We just need to put it all together.” Hightstown (7-4) 205 000 0 – 7 8 5 Ewing (9-3) 010 400 0 – 5 4 4 WP-Olsen. LP-Singer. 2B-Olsen, Velez (E), Gamboa-Ordini (E), A. Mahan.
