Baltimore County police arrested Pikesville High School’s athletic director Thursday and charged him with using artificial intelligence to create fake audio of the school’s principal making racist and antisemitic comments. The athletic director, Dazhon Darien, was charged with disrupting school activities. Police said Darien created the fake audio of Pikesville High School principal Eric Eiswert after Darien’s contract was not renewed, The Baltimore Sun reported. Audio of the alleged conversation circulated on social media in January, prompting an investigation by Baltimore County Public Schools officials. During the investigation, the school was placed under new leadership, WBAL reported. The audio was purported to capture comments by Eiswert, including disparaging statements about Black students’ test scores, complaints about Jewish residents, among other comments . The fake recording also included Eiswert addressing someone named Kathy. Listeners inferred this to be the school’s vice principal, Kathy Albert, who told police she never had the conversation featured in the fake audio, the Sun reported. Police found that Darien had searched for OpenAI tools on multiple occasions, and that the audio was distributed by an email account connected to Darien, The Baltimore Banner reported.
