PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Center for Justice has filed a lawsuit on behalf of multilingual learners and families to prevent the closure of 360 High School in Providence. The lawsuit was filed against the Rhode Island Department of Education and Providence Public Schools. According to the center, the students and their families are asking the federal court to protect their right to the supportive and inclusive education and language access they get at 360 High School. The center claims that closing the school violates the Federal Equal Educational Opportunity Act of 1974. The Act requires districts to make affirmative efforts to remove barriers to access for multilingual learners. According to the center, families in the lawsuit chose 360 High School because of the support given to Spanish-speaking students. 12 News has reached out to Providence Public Schools for comment and is awaiting to hear back.
