NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – New Mexico's insurance superintendent has confirmed that insurance carriers in the state will cover Opill, the first over-the-counter birth control pill that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Opill became FDA-approved in July 2023 and became available over the counter in March. Last month, the New Mexico Human Services Department announced that Medicaid providers in New Mexico will cover the cost of the pill, and according to the Office of the Superintendent of Insurance (OSI), private policyholders can now get Opill for free as well. Online college classes have increased in New Mexico, report shows The OSI said New Mexico health insurance carriers are required to cover the cost of the pill at in-network pharmacies and to have a reimbursement process for out-of-network pharmacies. So, privately insured New Mexicans under OSI-regulated plans can now get Opill at no cost and without a prescription. “OSI supports New Mexico’s commitment to expanding access to reproductive health and reproductive rights,” Superintendent of Insurance Alice Kane said in a press release. The plans covering Opill are those regulated by OSI. However, OSI does not oversee self-funded employer plans, Medicare, or TRICARE.
