MINOT, ND (KXNET) — In September 2022, Minot's entry into the Northwoods League baseball program looked to the Magic City for help in deciding a team name. After hundreds of applicants were narrowed down to five, the name Minot Hot Tots eventually won out — but as part of their second season, the team will be giving fans a chance to see how things would have gone if they'd taken up another of the competition's most popular mantles: the Minot Berserkers. A Berserker is another name for a Viking, with connotations of battling with reckless abandon. This history makes it a fitting mascot for a city like Minot, which proudly boasts its Scandinavian heritage. 2024 Shrine Bowl rosters announced This idea of keeping true to the area's origins will be reflected in the team's jerseys, which will pay homage to the original Norse word ber·serk, meaning 'bear-shirt' and often referring to a warrior who battles while wearing a bear pelt. “When we announced our real name last season," explained the Hot Tots' General Manager and Marketing Partner Monica Hocking. "The comments were mostly positive, but we had a few people who mentioned wanting a name that was more fierce, scary, or intimidating. This is our way of giving those people what they want, and getting to take on an alternate identity that is completely different than what fans are used to.” The Minot Hot Tots will play as the Berserkers during their June 6th, June 20th, and August 1st games.
