FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - After the Brickner family recently lost a loved one, they are finding a way to honor 19-year-old Bailey Brickner, through her love for animals. The Brickner family shared that Bailey was experiencing severe migraines in August 2023, the migraines became worse and received the news no one wants to hear. "We found out it was cancer," said Colleen Brickner, Bailey's mom. "It took a while to figure out what that cancer was because it was so rare, her neurosurgeon informed us just the other day that it's a one in a million cancer called meningeal melanoma." Bailey passed away April 11, 2024, that same day her family went to Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control (FWACC) to offer a sponsorship for a dog. Bailey's family thought this was the perfect way to honor her. Bailey loved animals and was working towards becoming a veterinarian. Bailey Brickner, 19, passed away April11, 2024. "I thought, at least for a year, I'm gonna go to Animal Care and Control and I'm going to sponsor the dog who has been there the longest or the least adoptable," Brickner said. "I knew that the first thing I had to do after she passed when I left the hospital was come here." Other family members also offered to sponsor dogs, a total of four dogs had their adoption fees waived. Three of the four dogs have been adopted, however, Little Bear an American Eskimo mix, is still looking for his forever home. Colleen hopes the lucky family who adopts Little Bear will think of Bailey and her love for animals. Stacy Moody, Bailey's Aunt with one of the sponsor dogs at FWACC. "Please remember to adopt and not shop," said Brickner. "There are so many dogs that are amazing and wonderful, that you can get at your local shelters and save a life. That was really going to be part of her life's work was to save as many as she could." FWACC's adoption office is open Tuesday through Saturday 12 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
