ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The days of $50/month high-speed internet for Greenlight customers are coming to an end. The fiber internet company sent an alert to customers Thursday, indicating the base price would be increasing by $5 effective with April bills. The company cites "changes in regulations, minimum wages, and the increased costs to build and support our network" as reasons behind the hike. Greenlight Networks to expand internet service to over 11,000 Webster households That $50 price has been a staple of Greenlight's pricing since the company launched more than a decade ago. Greenlight's higher-speed 1 Gig and 2 Gig tiers will remain at their current prices, $75/month and $100/month. Their fastest plan which is increasing to 8 Gig, will be reduced from $200 to $150 per month. A Greenlight spokesperson offered the following statement: Greenlight Networks believes in being transparent with our customers and are proud to have been able to offer the same basic rate for the last 13 years. While we are increasing our basic rate by $5, there are no increases in price in any of our other plans. It’s also important to note that there are no hidden fees or taxes with our pricing tiers. We have added greater value to the customer by expanding to 24/7 technical support and are continuing to increase speed tier options to meet customers' needs.  With New York's complex regulatory environment, ongoing high rates of inflation as well as new regulations on prevailing wage, the costs to build and support our network have risen significantly in recent months. While it is never an easy decision to change rates, we strive to offer the fastest speeds at affordable pricing.
