Providence Marathon canceled; Washington Bridge closure partially blamed
Mar 28, 2024
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Providence Marathon and Half Marathon races have been canceled this year, organizers announced Thursday.
Organizers said the cancellation was due to "unforeseen challenges," including the closure of the Washington Bridge.
"Your safety is our utmost concern, and we sincerely thank you for your patience, understanding, and support of this event," organizers posted on Facebook.
In an email to runners, the organization said it's giving participants an option to defer their current registration to next year's marathon.
Runners can also transfer their registration to another 2024 Ventures Endurance event or request a full refund by April 18.
"While the city is disappointed that there will not be a full or half marathon this year, we look forward to working with organizers in future years to develop a route that responds to the new challenges presented by the Washington Bridge closure to ensure a safe race for runners, neighbors and businesses," city spokesperson Josh Estrella wrote in a statement to 12 News.
