Two people died and a police officer was injured Monday when a reckless driver crashed into an Oakland police vehicle, according to officials and sources. The housing autho rity did not immediately provide specifics on the two fatalities or say if anyone else was injured. Oakland Councilmember Noel Gallo said the impact of the crash killed two passengers in the vehicle driven by the reckless driver. Sources with direct knowledge of the investigation said the officer involved in the crash was transported to a local hospital. They are expected to recover. An Oakland Housing Authority Police Department (OHAPD) officer initially spotted a vehicle driving recklessly in the area of East 12th Street, OHA said. The officer tried to pull the driver over, but the driver took off at a high rate of speed. The officer turned off his emergency lights and siren and did not chase after the driver, a move consistent with OHAPD policy, OHA said. Shortly thereafter, the driver crashed into an Oakland Police Department (OPD) vehicle. An investigation is ongoing. Additional information wasn’t immediately available. ...read more read less
