Louisville police officer Nathan Stotts has resigned, according to a statement from the Louisville Metro Police Department Monday afternoon.Stotts shot and killed Martin Nitzken Jr. at the end of May. after the shooting, LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey announced he was starting the process of firing Stotts. This does not meet our training, it is not what we teach and it does not meet our values,” Humphrey said last Tuesday at a press conference releasing body camera footage from the shooting.LMPD’s statement said Stotts’ resignation sped up the process of removing him from his position.“This resignation does not halt the termination process; rather, it expedites it by eliminating procedural delays associated with a potential appeal, ensuring that Mr. Stotts is immediately and permanently separated from LMPD,” it said.His personnel file will say that the department was terminating him when he resigned, according to the statement.The results of the internal investigation will be given to the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council, which has the power to revoke an officer’s certification, the statement said.
