The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office says at least four people are injured and one is hospitalized after a crash involving an MCSO squad car near N. 12th Street and W. Vliet Street on Saturday night.According to a release from
MCSO, the sequence of events leading up to the crash began around 7 p.m. on May 23 when an MCSO deputy in the agencys Parks Patrol Unit was driving in the area of N. 35th Street W. North Avenue. There, he saw a vehicle that was reported stolen out of Illinois by a Chicago-area police department. The vehicle was unoccupied when the deputy saw it, the release says, and the deputy requested backup before approaching it.As backup arrived, three people entered the vehicle. Multiple MCSO units then boxed the vehicle in and took all three individuals into custody, the release adds. The two passengers of the reported-stolen vehicle were released from MCSO custody a short time later. The release says that the driver, who had drug paraphernalia on him, was kept in custody by MCSO on a charge of operating a vehicle without owners consent. As the MCSO deputy who initially spotted the stolen vehicle was taking its driver to the downtown Milwaukee Criminal Justice Facility, he saw the man in the rear of his squad vehicle become non-responsive and enter sudden medical distress, the release continues. The release says that the MCSO deputy then decided to transport the driver instead to an area hospital that was on the way to the Criminal Justice Facility. The MCSO deputy then turned on his squad vehicle's emergency lights and sirens and drove southbound on N. 12th Street, entering the intersection of 12th and W. Vliet Street, where he crashed the squad vehicle into another vehicle that was traveling east on Vliet, according to the release. The first vehicle that was hit by the MCSO squad car rolled over, and the collision caused the squad vehicle to careen into a second vehicle, the release says. The first vehicle that was hit by the MCSO squad car had multiple people inside of it who reported minor, non-life threatening injuries. The release adds that the driver of the second vehicle that was hit when the MCSO squad vehicle careened into it also reported minor injuries. The MCSO deputy also suffered minor injuries during the deployment of his vehicles airbag, the release says. The man taken into MCSO custody for driving the stolen vehicle was then taken out of the squad car by EMS first responders and treated at the scene with naloxone, after which he was brought back to consciousness, the release adds. All of the people involved in this crash were examined and treated by EMS first responders, and the man who was originally detained was taken to an area hospital for treatment where he remains in custody while under medical observation.MCSO says the entire sequence of events leading up to the crash are under investigation. Its about time to watch on your time.
