Two deadly fires were under investigation in New York City Saturday. Two people were killed after fire burned on the second floor of a three story mixed-use building on Nostrand Ave. between Cortelyou Rd. and Clarendon Rd. in Flatbush, Brooklyn, the FDNY said. “Here one minute, gone the next . Definitely a reality check,” neighbor Edwin Savaille told NBC New York. Flames shot out of an apartment shortly before 7:00 AM. Savaille lives next door to where the fire burned. “The yelling woke me up, then (I) went back to sleep, then woke up again when someone yelled outside ‘fire!’,” he said. Savaille says he looked outside and saw flames just five feet from him. Police say two women were able to escape from the top floor. But an 86-year-old woman and 65-year-old man were both found unconscious and pronounced dead. “We’re all heartbroken,” said Jonathan Ortiz, who works at nearby JBD Mini Market. He tells News 4 that a mother and son who’ve lived in that second floor unit for decades are like family. “We were calling them. We were hoping when we arrived they would be out here, but it wasn’t the case,” he said. “He was a good son to her,” Ortiz added. “He would work and just come home, take care of his mom. She depended a lot on him,” he said. “He helped the community a lot with the kids,” Ortiz added. Second fire burns in The Bronx Fire marshals began their investigation hours after another deadly fire in The Bronx. A 51-year-old man was killed and two women in their 60s were rushed to the hospital, after fire burned on the top floor of a six-story apartment building in Morris Heights. That fire probe includes many lingering questions, after law enforcement sources say police were first called to the West Tremont Ave. building for a domestic assault report around 1:00 AM. “I used to see them everyday. They seemed happy. But then, you never know,” a neighbor told News 4. When officers arrived, the building was burning. Dozens of firefighters got to work. Jose Gonzalez lives on the third floor and smelled the smoke. “The water was coming down in my apartment,” he said. “I opened the door, I went outside to the hall, I see them take the body out in a bag.” Neighbors say the man who died there lived with his girlfriend, and another woman who was their roommate. Police are still looking into that assault call. They’re also waiting for the results of the fire marshal investigation. A partial vacate order has been issued. Seven families are now getting help from the Red Cross, along with a temporary place to stay. The names of those who died in the fires had not been released as of Saturday afternoon. ...read more read less
