Feb 19, 2026
Theft from two BankWest locations in Mitchell resulted in an amount estimated to be around $80,000 in cash being taken from ATM machines.
The theft is what’s called “ATM jackpotting” and it happened late night February 13, 2026, into the morning of Feb. 14.
According to BankersOnline.com, ATM
jackpotting is a sophisticated crime where thieves target ATMs and compromise the machine’s internal computer or cash dispenser. It’s a cyber-physical crime which means there’s both a physical breach and a software manipulation. Criminals often pose as maintenance technicians to access the ATM and install malware to override the machine’s security. Once triggered, the ATM releases cash so fast, it’s reminiscent of hitting the jackpot at a casino.
During the incidents in Mitchell, the suspect approaches the ATMs on foot wearing a mask and body covering. No vehicle was seen, but Mitchell Police investigators continue to look for additional video security footage. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Mitchell Police Department (605-995-8400).
BankWest is based in Pierre and has 25 branch locations throughout South Dakota.
