INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — IU never held the lead and lost to Louisville, 87-78. IU started the game down 16-0 and did not score their first points until over six minutes had passed. The Hoosiers were able to trim the Louisville lead down to five in the first half, but never got it any lower tha n that. “They did a really good job early defensively,” IU head coach Darian DeVries said. “We couldn’t get loose. We couldn’t get a lot of space. We were competing defensively, but when you’re not scoring, it makes it really challenging.” “They came out ready to play,” IU forward Tucker DeVries said. “To be honest, I thought we played really hard, a lot harder. There’s certain things execution wise, really being dialed in on the defensive end. The defensive mistakes wasn’t really a lack of effort or physicality. Those mistakes we got to clean up.” This is IU’s second straight loss after starting the season 7-0. Despite the loss and the rough start, DeVries was proud of the way his team fought back. “I thought our guys composure even after the rough start, they continued to just battle and chip away, chip away… We could just never quite get over that hump to get us within a couple possessions,” Darian DeVries said. Tucker DeVries led IU with 26 points and shot 5-14 from the field. Lamar Wilkerson had 12 points on 5-15 shooting. As a team, IU shot 41.3% from the field and 32.4% from three. It also had 13 turnovers. The Hoosiers struggled defending beyond the arc, as Louisville knocked down 13 threes and shot 41.9% from three-point range. Ryan Conwell led Louisville with 21 points. He knocked down three three-pointers. Next up for the Hoosiers is a matchup with Penn State at Assembly Hall. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. ...read more read less
