The Princeville Farmers and Artists Market has been around for three years, held every Saturday at Prince Albert Park.
According to coordinator Desirea Hirani, the market started off with about 15 vendors but has since grown to 50 members.

Hirani added that the market grew with the support of and permission from the Princeville at Hanalani Community Association.
Roughly 1,000 people stopped by each Saturday, supporting the small farmers and business owners like Taylor Garcia, owner of Kealia Organics.
"It's like a really cool hub for a place where everyone's also doing the same thing. You know, we get to come together and create, like this, environment for us to all thrive in," said Garcia. "It's really so amazing that this, like three-hour market allows us to financially thrive in a rural place."
On Monday, Jan. 6, Hirani found out the market was being shut down due to a zoning violation and the closure leaves all 50 vendors without a main source of income.
"Although the Association does support us, they did receive notification from the planning department that we are not in a commercial zone."
In a statement, Kauai County said the complaint is under investigation by the Planning Department.
"I have several business owners. They're in tears, they're heartbroken, they are in panic."
Taylor added the situation feels like getting hit with COVID all over again. Some fear the closure of this market could have a domino effect.

For now, Hirani is trying to secure a new location for the market, with the farmers and kupuna being the first priority.
She said she is also hoping to work with the Kauai City Council to see if they can help change zoning rules to allow farmers markets in residential areas.
