Tonight, expect more clouds to build back into the DMV as precipitation chances increase overnight for the mountains. While the precipitation type will be mainly rain, temperatures above 3500 feet in the Alleghenies, Blue Ridge Mountains, and Catoctin Mountains may be chilly enough for an isolated freezing rain threat. Forecast overnight lows will be in the 30s, with only those at higher elevations getting below freezing. The last weekend of 2024 looks a bit wet but much milder than where we have been. Saturday will start wet, with patchy fog expected over the area as the first of multiple storms impact the DMV. The early-day showers will dwindle later in the afternoon and into the early evening before more rain quickly returns on Sunday. Expect to dress for temperatures in the upper 40s to lower 50s, with overnight lows in the 40s. On Sunday, another vigorous storm system and associated warm front move through the area during the afternoon and evening hours. Heavy cloud cover is expected throughout the day, limiting daytime heating, yet temperatures rise into the upper 50s to low 60s. The bulk of the heaviest rain arrives after dark, and as the front moves over the area, some thunderstorms may be seen, especially in Northern Virginia. It is also feasible that any thunderstorm produces strong wind gusts. A strong cold front on Monday will move off our coast, helping the area dry out. During the afternoon, we may even see some sunshine and gusty winds. There is no cold air behind this front, so daytime highs are forecast to be mild again and into the 50s to near 60. On Tuesday, the last storm system will move into the region during a weather pattern, bringing more wet weather. While most of the daylight hours stay rain-free, the soggy storm looks to impact the region during New Year's Eve. Aside from the showers, temperatures will once again remain above average, with another day in the 50s. New Year's Day starts with much quieter weather, although mountain snow showers are forecasted. Otherwise, many folks will see more sunshine and colder temperatures. The thermometer will steadily fall Wednesday night into Thursday and carry the cold into the upcoming weekend. Expect Thursday to see many people deal with high temperatures return to the mid-30s to mid-40s, with 20s across the mountains, before falling further into Friday. 7-Day Forecast: Tonight: Cloudy with scattered showers.
