WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - President-elect Donald Trump promised to carry out mass deportations of people in the U.S. illegally, while on the campaign trail. Over the weekend, at the Turning Point USA Conference, President-elect Trump promised to begin when he takes office.  Tom Homan will be the incoming "border czar," President-elect Trump announced.  "The operation will start Day 1," Homan told NewsNation's Ali Bradley.  Homan said his operation will reinstitute the "Remain in Mexico" policy, which forces people applying for asylum to wait in Mexico until it's approved. Homan told Bradley the administration will detain and deport parents, even if their children are U.S. citizens.  "Having a U.S. citizen child doesn't make you immune from our laws," Homan said. "If you choose to have a U.S. citizen child while you're in the country illegally, you put yourself in that position. You put your family in that position."  The Trump administration's proposed mass deportation operation will likely cost around $86 billion, Homan said. The yearly budget for ICE is around $8 billion, the agency's website said.  "The next administration is determined to remove those who serve as the backbone of our local economies and communities," Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), in a press conference after the election. "Our solution, instead of turning our military on our own people, is, to document them. Document the undocumented."  Homan has also indicated, the Trump administration could bring back workplace raids, looking for people here illegally.  "We need to focus on the criminals, the people affiliated with terrorist organizations," said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas). "To me, that should be our priority."  Cornyn said he hopes the incoming Trump team controls illegal immigration, while upholding the legal immigration system.  Homan said his biggest concern is not having enough money to carry out the operation.
