UNC Chapel Hill, NFL legend Lawrence Taylor speaks on Bill Belichick hire

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – One week after the University of North Carolina shocked the college football world with the hiring of six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick, many continue to debate the amount of success the former New England Patriots coach will have on the collegiate level.
One person adding to the conversation is former UNC standout and NFL linebacker Lawrence Taylor, who played under Belichick through the majority of his Pro Football Hall of Fame career with the New York Giants.
Taylor, who became a consensus All-American selection and the 1980 ACC Player of the Year during his time in Chapel Hill, said the Tar Heels program is ready to take its next step into the national stage with his old defensive coordinator at the helm.
“All I can say is that Carolina's got a chance to win it all again now – they got a chance,” Taylor told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Wednesday. “I think it's all about recruiting and all that stuff. One thing I've got to tell you, if you're looking at Bill Belichick, he has the knowledge, he knows the game of football.”

“And all I think he’s got to do now is put a team together that’s going to help him recruit,” he added.
Belichick secured his first victory on the recruiting trail over the weekend, signing East Forsyth quarterback Bryce Baker, one of the highest-ranked prospects in the state of North Carolina. On Saturday night, Baker walked onto the court with Belichick as he was introduced to the crowd at the Dean E. Smith Center during the La Salle-UNC men’s basketball game.
Belichick made an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” earlier this week, expressing his confidence and enthusiasm toward the recruiting aspect of the job, which has evolved drastically for college coaches over recent years due to the emergence of name, image and likeness (NIL) deals and the transfer portal.
“We've been talking to a number of players and we have more coming in this week as part of the portal, that closes on Sunday, so we've got guys coming in pretty much every day this week,” Belichick said. “We're selling the program but, quite honestly, we've had a lot of players and agents are coming to us saying that ‘We wanna be part of the program.’”
He even compared this modern era of college sports to how business is conducted in the NFL, although in a very different environment.
“It's fun, and it's great to be at North Carolina, and great to be at this great university and back in the game. We're spending money, not as much as we spent in the NFL," Belichick continued. "It's a new landscape in college football, but honestly not too different – it's different, but this part of the process isn't too different from what we've dealt with in the NFL.”
Meanwhile, Taylor seems elated by the idea of his old coach taking over his alma mater.
“When you’re talking about knowing the game of football, Bill Belichick is the man,” he said.
