NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — An argument near Champion Square left one man wounded and another in police custody on Friday night, Dec. 13. According to the New Orleans Police Department, the shooting happened at 11:10 p.m. in the 1400 block of Girod Street. Father of crash victims blames Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office for pursuing suspected shoplifter Officers said the victim and his family along with the suspect, 20-year-old Gavin Calais were exiting a high school championship football game held at the Caesars Superdome, when an argument occurred. Nearby officers reported hearing gunshots and responded to the scene to find the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to a hospital by EMS where he was listed to be in stable condition. An investigation revealed the argument originally began during the game. Through witness, statements, NOPD officers said they were able to locate Calais and his vehicle. This incident underscores the importance of swift action and collaboration between our officers and the community. The suspect’s actions endangered lives, but thanks to the quick and decisive response of our officers, we were able to ensure the safety of others and take a dangerous individual off the streets.
