FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Christmas is right around the corner, and Fresno Fire urges those adorning their homes with festive décor take precautions to avoid any accidents this holiday season.  "It's a message that you'll hear us say time and time again, but make sure your home is equipped with working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors," said Josh Sellers, Fresno Fire Public Information Officer.  While it may seem redundant, the Fresno Fire Department responds to an alarming number of structure fires. "We're at 1063 structure fires this year," Sellers said. Those who have a Christmas tree in their home, real or artificial, have a greater chance of a home fire - which is why Sidney Boolootian of Sid's Christmas Trees in Clovis has been educating tree buyers for 46 years. "There's maintenance involved in it," Boolootian said. When picking the perfect tree, Boolootian suggests looking for branches that are flexible and bounce back.  "Make sure it gets a fresh cut before the water stand is put on the tree because if you don't, the stump is sealed off and it won't draw water properly," Boolootian said. To keep the trees lush, they will need to be watered constantly. The tree should never run out of water, as it will become a fire hazard if it does. "If you have a string of lights that short, that thing will just go up in flames," Boolootian said. Those that take proper care of their tree can expect it to last about four weeks. Once it starts turning brown and feels dry, it is time to throw it out. For those putting decorations outside, make sure they are rated for outdoor use. "Sometimes we do see some accidents and overloading, connecting too many strands, plugging them directly into outlets, and overloading the electrical circuits, so I always recommend following the manufacturer's recommendations as to how many strands should be connected," Sellers said. If using a ladder, make sure it is on a flat surface before climbing; it is also a good idea to have an extra hand. "That saves you from climbing up and down the ladder, can hand you the items that way you're not leaning over, reaching for them, just exercising good caution," Sellers said.
