California lottery suggests after you find out you won start interviewing three lawyers and choose the one you're most comfortable with.
After that, you have up to 180 days to claim your prize unless you win the Powerball or Mega Millions jackpots then you have one year from the date you won, according to the winners handbook from Calottery.
The payments are then set to be paid to the winner in 30 graduated installments and the winner gets the chance to choose the value of the prize within 60 days following their approved claim.

The winner will also fill out a California Lottery Jackpot election payment form and have the chance to fill it out at the District Office when you claim your prize or you can have the form sent to you.
According to the handbook, the form has to be notarized and returned to the Lottery within 60 days from the date you approved your claim if it is not completed at the office.
California Lottery is subject to public disclosure when it comes to the winner's full name, the name, and location of the retailer who sold you the ticket, the date you won, the number of your winnings, and the installment payments as they are public records.
