Cole Martinez got his first high school goal last year and the smile got a lot broader on Friday night when the Robbinsville/Allentown/Jackson forward recorded his first career three-goal game. “It’s really cool,’’ stated Martinez. “It’s my first high school hat trick and it’s a good feeling. It was fun out there.’’ It was fun for the RAJ Co-op right from the start as it scored less than two minutes into the game and cruised to an 8-0 win over Colonial Valley Conference Colonial Division rival Princeton on a chilly night at the Mercer County Skating Center. The win is the sixth straight for the Ravens (2-2, 2-1 CVC) over Princeton (1-3, 1-2 CVC). The Tigers have now dropped three straight games. The RAJ win saw it bounce back from a tough 4-2 loss to a very good Ridge team. “I think the Ridge game was a tremendous lift for us,’’ said longtime coach Dan Bergan. “Now, we have gotten past Notre Dame and Princeton in our division and I think we are right in the midst to defend our division title.’’ Besides Martinez’s hat trick, the Ravens saw 11 players dent the scoresheet. “We had great work ethic,’’ said Bergan. “Our defense played cautiously and didn’t get caught deep. The offense was flowing, Cole Martinez has his first hat trick, Tyler Wagner, a freshman, with his first shutout and he was solid. Shane D’Auria had his first goal, Robert Tignini from Jackson had his first goal.’’ Martinez had a six-point game with three assists, Shane D’Auria had a goal and an assist, Robert Tignini had a goal and two assists, Zach Duggan had a pair of goals, Marcus Johansson had a goal, Michael Buchanan had a pair of assists, Jack Lawrence has two assists, Jack Lachance had one helper as did Alexander Margolin, James Morino and Couper Martinez, who is Cole’s brother. “It was great my brother assisted on my last goal for the hat trick that was cool,’’ said Cole, who is from Allentown. “It was important to want to get back on track to win the CVC. We know we are going to work our way back up after starting 1-2.’’ All is not lost for the Tigers either as it looks to get back to the way it played in their season opener when they doubled up Notre Dame, 6-3. “We have a very young group and we have to play 45 minutes of hockey,’’ said Princeton coach Rik Johnson. “We have only one line of the older guys to lead the group, so I think others start to grip the sticks a little harder and it gets tough. Each game we are learning and we’ll be okay.’’ It’s going to once again be an interesting race in the Colonial Division. Hopewell Valley has gotten off to a fast start, but RAJ, Princeton and ND are getting a little better each game. Breaking out a weapon like Cole Martinez can only help the Ravens.
