Average egg prices surge 38% since 2023, but not in Massachusetts: Here's why

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The price of eggs could reach a record high across the country, but in Massachusetts, the situation is a little different.
Back in 2016, a law passed that banned the confinement of egg-laying hens, meaning caged eggs were banned from sale and production in the state of Massachusetts. Nine other states across the country have the same cage-free law.
Arnold's Meats Owner Larry Katz told 22News, "All of these egg companies have switched to cage-free to give to Massachusetts and California, which means we are getting more eggs than we actually know what to do with."
Katz said right now, bird flu is also impacting many chicken companies which has killed so many chickens that the companies are switching to cage-free eggs. Therefore, there are more cage-free eggs being produced and fewer caged eggs which may lead to an increase in price.
At Arnold's Meats, not only is the cheaper cage-free price nice for him but also for all of his retail, institutional, and restaurant customers, especially as eggs normally rise during the holiday seasons.
