JEMEZ SPRINGS (KRQE) – The Village of Jemez Springs and the Pueblo of Jemez celebrated their annual Light is Gisewa on Friday, raising money for the Jemez Historic Site. The event has been going on for more than 20 years. The first year the event saw 500 guests. Now, it averages more than 5,000. Besides the lanterns, there were also traditional native dancers performing for the crowd. For many first-timers, they were mesmerized by the music and the scenery. “I would read about it in the paper and I thought I'm coming this year so I'm glad I did,” said one visitor. The event also featured local craftsmen and artists, showcasing and selling their work. “I think that's the most incredible way to learn more about the indigenous peoples of Jemez,” said Amy Tang from the Pueblo of Jemez.
