Adopt a pet for the holidays without paying adoption fees at RACC
Dec 13, 2024
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- With the holiday season in full swing, the Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC) is offering a special adoption opportunity for those looking to add a furry friend to their family this winter.
"There's no adoption fee -- you can use that extra $100 to go buy supplies for your pet," said RACC outreach coordinator Haley Childress. "It's a weekend, so enjoy the long weekend with your new friend."
Through the Whitten Brother's Automotive "Paws for a Purpose Program," RACC is waiving adoption fees for all cats and dogs through 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15.
Normally, the program sponsors one adoption per week -- but, for this weekend only, every cat and dog adoption fee will be covered by it, according to Childress.
"During Thanksgiving, we were able to get a lot of dogs out," Childress said. "Since then, we have filled right back up. So we have tons of animals that are ready to go home."

With winter months often leading to an increase in animals being surrendered, RACC is encouraging people to take advantage of these waived adoption fees. It's important to know what to look out for if you adopt during the winter.
"Keep in mind it's cold on their feet, too -- you don't want to go for super lengthy walks when it's cold on their feet," Childress said. "You could get little booties to cover their feet and if they do stay outside, obviously, get straw bedding."
Holiday safety is another consideration for pet owners, especially during the festivities.
"Keep in mind -- look out for the ornaments on the tree. Cats want to play with them," Childress said. "Avoid plants if you have pets in your home -- [like] lilies, another common flower that is also poisonous to cats. Even just like the powder that comes off of the pollen, that is poisonous."
In addition to RACC, the Richmond Animal League is also offering discounted adoption fees, with cats and dogs available for just $10 until Dec. 19. The Henrico County Police Animal Shelter will also hold a holiday adoption event on Saturday, Dec 14 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 10421 Woodman Road.
