Drones light up the Hampton Roads skies

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — This Christmas season, many people are seeing the sky light up.
Across Hampton Roads, many people reached out to 10 On Your Side about what these bright images cutting through the darkness are.
"I observed it flying approximately 200 feet off the ground," one person told 10 On Your Side. "It had one constant red light that it was displaying, and then there appeared to be three white lights on the bottom side of the drone. And then the lights turned off and you could no longer see the drone at all."
Drones are tiny but mighty. Erick Brock, CEO of Ondas Autonomous Systems, said the aviation tool can be used for several different reasons.
"Drones are used for good, they're used for public safety, they're used for law enforcement and fire, emergency response, inspection of critical infrastructure that helps us maintain safe critical infrastructure, it's for delivery of packages," said Eric Brock, CEO Ondas Holdings.
Brock said the most common drone is the quadcopter, and often, the drones operate for a good reason, within Federal Aviation Administration guidelines.
"You'll see drones have lights for safety reasons," Brock said, "and the drones that have lights on them are typically the good drones. Lights are for FAA regulation and to avoid collision with aircrafts. Most of them are not nefarious. Very often, you'll see drones flying with permission to do so, and they're performing a task, and if there's a task being performed that may be near your house, it may get personal, and I can understand that, but at the same time they can be operating lawfully and doing good things."
One person told 10 On Your Side it's the unknown factor that has the public concerned about what the drone is doing in their backyard.
"I'm a father, and the unknown of this situation really concerns me," one person told 10 On Your Side. "I worry about keeping my family safe, keeping my children safe. It is the unknown that is so unnerving with this situation. You know, what is that? And all the questions that come into play with this is just scary."
However, a neighbor said we should to stay vigilant.
"I would just keep a watchful eye if I were everyone else," one person said. "They're only flying 200 to 300 feet off the ground. It's clearing some of the trees, barely clearing some of the trees. And I think that we should all take the time to observe and report as necessary and just be aware of the situation."
