KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Some Brookside residents woke up to a bizarre sight Friday morning. Bags of yard waste that had been put out on the curb for collection had caught fire overnight. No one was hurt in the fires and they did not cause any property damage but neighbors are still wondering how it happened. Fires were reported near the Plaza to the Brookside neighborhood and as far south as 90th Street. For a lot of the neighbors FOX4 spoke to, they had never heard of anything like this happening before. $625 million requested for World Cup security in US host cities Jeff Dover was in his house on Thursday night, when a loud car passed by and he looked out of his house. “I looked around to the left and I saw flames coming up from a big pile of leaves,” he said. His neighbor had raked the leaves earlier in the week, and there were 15-20 bags lined up along the curb to be picked up. He went to help put out the flames. “It was windy,” Dover said. “And literally the embers were just swirling with the wind and blowing downrange a little bit.” Dover was with the fire department as they put out the fire on his street. The Kansas City Police Department confirmed that they responded to several fires of yard waste on Wednesday night but had no reports of the fires Thursday night. All of the fires they responded to were either leaves or other yard waste. Dover has lived in his home for 20 years and says that he’s never seen or heard anything like this happening before. “No, I've never heard of just random fires set like this ever," he said. KCPD reported that no one was injured and no damage was done, but Dover said it could have been much worse. “They start spreading and who knows where it can go from there. So, it was really pretty a ridiculous thing to happen," he said. “You hear about car break ins, and you hear about all that kind of stuff all the time but this is just malicious vandalism.” KCPD could not confirm if the fires had been intentionally. That's just idiotic. No, I've never heard of just random fires set in like this ever.” KCPD says the cause of the fires are unknown and they do not have any suspects.
