Santa and helpers visit Children's Hospital

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Big Man in Red and a team of elite elves rappelled down the side of Children's Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs on Friday, Dec. 13, to bring smiles and magic to children going through treatment during the holidays.
A group of soldiers from the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) joined Santa Claus himself on Friday as they descended five stories from the roof of the hospital. A parade was also held, featuring Denver Broncos cheerleaders and mascot Thunder, police and firefighters, mounted police and Rangerettes, Disney characters, and even Captain America himself.

"Members of the 10th Special Forces Group rappelled down the Children's Hospital to spread a little holiday cheer," said Maj. Charles Chellman, Public Information Officer with the 10th Special Forces Group. "This shows you who we really are, you know, we want to give back."
And while events like this bring smiles to so many children's faces, it's also rewarding for the people taking part to know they've brought a moment of reprieve to families going through a tough time.
"I can only imagine what the mom and dads and the kids are going through, and to sit there and be able to see the smiles through the windows and the smiles in the parade. It's a special moment to share," said Maj. Chellman.
Being in the hospital for an extended time is never easy, but for kids who should be home enjoying the holidays, it can be especially difficult to feel joyful. That's where some of their favorite characters stepped in to provide magic that will hopefully get them through their challenges this holiday.

"So we just put on a parade for the kids here at Children's Hospital order to raise awareness for their need for some special Christmas magic this year," said "Colorado Captain," Matt Gnojek. "And I'm just really hoping that some of those smiles that I saw on the windows can last throughout this New Year as well."

And while so many heroes showed up to take part in the parade, Colorado Captain wants to remind the kids in the hospital that they are heroes for fighting so hard to get better.
"It's small people and small acts of goodness that make this world a place where we could believe in the magic of superheroes. But they're the only heroes that I care about today," Gnojek said, pointing to the hospital. "They're so strong, and someone deserves to tell them that they're better than strong. They're them, and they are everything they ever need to be. We're all very proud of them. And it's only just begun."
