Offensive woes doom Packers in loss to Huskies
Dec 13, 2024
The Austin boys basketball team had trouble getting its offensive going as it never held a lead in a 52-37 in Packer Gym Friday.
Austin (1-3 overall) had just two players score more than five points as the team struggled with turnovers from the start. The Huskies (3-1 overall) opened the game on an 18-5 run and the Packers never got closer than eight the rest of the way.
“I don’t know if it was so much about pace, I think it was a lot more about decision making,” Austin head coach Jamaal Gibson said. “We’re smarter than that and we just made poor decisions. I don’t know if it’s because we’re stepping into a new role or if we just need more reps. We’re just not going to beat a decent basketball team if we’re turning the ball over like that, especially when we’re not hitting shots either.”
Senior Boden Bergstrom hit five three-pointers to lead the Packers with 15 points and Cole Hebrink added 14 points as he connected on four three-pointers.
Hebrink hit a big three to bring Austin within 33-25 with 11:33 left in the game, but Owatonna’s Cole Krushke, who scored 13 points, hit back-to-back threes to push the lead back to 39-25. Gavin Burmeister led the Huskies with 17 points.
“We feel OK with where we’re at. The way we played defense tonight was better than we have,” Gibson said. “If our guys that can shoot it hit a few more shots and we don’t have so many turnovers, it’s a different game. It’s hard to convince them until we see some film, but I feel OK. I think we’re headed in the right direction.”
Austin scoring: Boden Bergstrom, 15; Cole Hebrink, 14; Banyaan Omot, 5; Xzayveun Severin, 3
