SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KRON) -- Flames ripped through an apartment perched above a historic post office in Brookdale, a small town nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains at 12:30 a.m. Friday. Firefighters rescued several victims, including children, who live in the second-story apartment.
Fire crews halted flames from spreading into the Brookdale Post Office on the first story, according to the Boulder Creek Fire Department.
Neighbors rescued four residents from the burning building before firefighters arrived. Once firefighters arrived on scene, they were alerted that a man and two children were still trapped inside.
Boulder Creek firefighters entered the smoke-filled apartment and found an unconscious child inside, fire officials said. A firefighter carried the unconscious child into an ambulance. The two remaining victims were also rescued and transported to hospitals.

Photojournalist Alekz Londos shot video of firefighters rushing to rescue victims and douse the blaze. Londos wrote, "This has been a profoundly traumatizing event for the neighborhood, the community, and the brave first responders who put themselves on the line to help."
One of the family's dogs died in the fire. The three injured victims are now "recovering from smoke inhalation and burns. While one of the family’s dogs was able to make it out safely, unfortunately their other dog died as a result of the fire," the fire department wrote.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
