Devin Williams is on the move. Milwaukee is trading its closer to the New York Yankees in a deal that will include lefty starter Nestor Cortes coming back to the Brewers. “We are excited to add Nestor to the organization,” Arnold said in a team release Friday. “Nestor brings an accomplished veteran left-handed presence to the starting rotation and we look forward to him playing a key role in our success in 2025.” A two-time NL Reliever of the Year and 2020 NL Rookie of the Year, the 30-year-old Williams leaves town as one of the better relievers and closers in franchise history. Over six seasons, he posted 1.83 ERA while collecting 68 saves, most of which came after Josh Hader was traded in the middle of the 2022 season. Williams was an All-Star in 2022 and 2023. He missed a large chunk of the 2024 season with an injury, but eventually returned to collect 14 saves and posted a 1.25 ERA. “Devin Williams played a major role in the team’s success over recent seasons and we are grateful to have had him perform for us at such a high level,” Arnold said in a release. “We wish Devin all the best in his career going forward.” Williams’ results in the playoffs did not match his play in the regular season, though his opportunities were limited due to injuries in 2020 and 2022. In three appearances during the 2023 postseason and this past October, Williams allowed six runs in just 2 1/3 innings. That included giving up four runs to the New York Mets in the deciding Game 3 loss that ended Milwaukee’s 2024 season. Cortes will be on his fourth team, though he spent the last four years with the Yankees. That included a 2024 that saw the 30-year-old go 9-10 with a 3.75 ERA. The other player reportedly included in the deal with minor league second baseman Caleb Durbin. Caleb Durbin has a unique profile. He's only 5-foot-6 but plays everywhere — 2B, 3B, SS, CF — and has incredible bat-to-ball skills. In 1,216 minor league PA, he has slashed .269/.374/.407 with 134 walks, 111 strikeouts and 110 stolen bases. A high-floor guy for Milwaukee. — Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) December 13, 2024 The post Brewers trade closer Devin Williams to the Yankees first appeared on 96.7FM 1670AM The Zone | WOZN - Madison, WI.
