Over 30 years of tradition: Bakersfield man donates bicycles to children in need

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The 17 News studio has been accepting donations of toys for our annual 17 Days of Christmas Toy Drive for children between the ages of 5 to 18.
The toys will be donated to the Open Door Network and the Boys and Girls Club of Kern County.
Of course, all donations are special and make Christmas wishes come true, but there's a man who donates to our Toy Drive every single year, and this year was no exception.
Gary Guinn has been spreading holiday cheer in our town for well over 30 years. It didn't start with him, and it didn't start with toys, but it grew into such.
"Started out with turkeys…for years my father did it before me," said Guinn. "One day I was unloading the turkeys with him and he told me, 'Son, these little kids don't get anything. Let's get them some tricycles next year'."
Now, it's become a holiday tradition for the Guinns. Something Gary now does with his own son, long after his father has stopped.
"He's Santa Claus, I'm just Santa's helper," said son Tim. "It's just really exciting to see the joy that it brings him, he loves doing it and I know we'll continue to do it as long as we can."

He's given out dozens, maybe even hundreds of bikes, but one Christmas miracle he granted for a little girl stands out in his mind.
"Santa came over with a bicycle, and she went up to her mom, she was a little bitty girl, and she grabbed her mother's skirt and she's pulling on it, and she says 'Mommy, is that really for me?'" said Guinn, almost tearing up as he recalls the story. "And boy, that broke me up."
As Gary carries on the goodwill of gift giving that his father demonstrated, all he hopes is to make a child's Christmas special.
"Usually, these kids are underprivileged kids that don't get anything," said Gary. "Lots of them, this is the very first bike they've ever had. I saw them give it away one time and they smile and it's really something. I'm very proud to be a part of it."
