Mysterious drone flights over New Jersey: Homeland Security shares new details The videos in Easthampton were captured on a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6. They told 22News that they were "completely unaware of what's been going on over NJ and other areas of the country (prompting FBI investigation and congressional hearing this week) in recent weeks! I took several videos." VIDEO: Suspected drone over Easthampton Since early December, there have been reports of large drones in the air above New Jersey. The flights have been at night and drones have been spotted near military bases and even flying near President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course. The FBI says they are investigating along with the Department of Homeland Security and the Coast Guard by using numerous detection methods to understand the origins of the sightings. On Thursday the White House said there is no evidence of a national security or public safety threat after reports of drone sightings in New Jersey. White House: No evidence of public safety threat from NJ drone sightings “We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or a public safety threat or have a foreign nexus,” National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby told reporters. Kirby said that it appears that many of the reported sightings are manned aircraft being operated lawfully, adding there have been no reported drone sightings in restricted areas. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) is urging officials to find the people responsible, "The ones flying these drones ought to be tracked down and held accountable for common sense, public safety." 22News contacted the closest military base to Easthampton, Barnes Air National Guard Base in Westfield for a statement and are waiting to hear back. In addition, the closest airport to Easthampton is the Northampton Airport which is located on Old Ferry Road with 55 acres with one runway. What are the rules for flying drones? As drones continue to grow in popularity, it’s important to know the rules and regulations. No-fly zones are enforced around airports, military installations, nuclear plants, certain landmarks including the Statue of Liberty, and sports stadiums during games. You must fly at or below 400 feet when in uncontrolled airspace. Flying a drone near airports also has its rules. You cannot fly within a 5-mile radius of an airport, but that’s for large airports with a control tower. The regulations for smaller airports, like the one in Northampton are different, they just require a phone call. REPORT: Spotted an unidentified flying object (UFO)?
