RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Symphony will present its Celebration of Black Music in Film showcase, honoring the legacy of musical heritage in Black cinema. "The Celebration of Black Music in Film" will be held at 8 p.m. on Jan. 18, 2025, in the Carpenter Theatre at Dominion Energy Center. Tickets begin at $10 and can be purchased online. According to the Richmond Symphony, the showcase will feature an appearance from the jazz group Butcher Brown -- one of Richmond's very own. "We're excited to partner with Butcher Brown to elevate this event to new heights," said Matt Wilshire, VP of Artistic Operations for the Richmond Symphony. "Their unique blend of jazz, hip-hop, and funk will add a modern dimension to these classic soundtracks." James Crump, a local entrepreneur organized the special edition showcase in partnership with the Richmond Symphony -- seeking to create an event that would entertain, educate and inspire. “I wanted to take something that people already connect with—things that hold so much weight in Black culture—and present it in a place that is historically known for displaying the talents of the best of the best,” Crump said. “‘The Celebration of Black Music in Film’ will affirm Black art is, in fact, fine art.” The Richmond Symphony said the audience will hear arrangements of soundtracks from movies like The Wiz, Get Out, Superfly, Crooklyn, Purple Rain and more. Naima Burrs, the Guest Conductor and Music Director of the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, will be leading the symphony. “I’m looking forward to highlighting some of the best musical scores written across a variety of genres, which have served as significant soundtracks for Black cinema,” Burrs said. “Many of these films reflect the power and beauty of the Black experience, sharing history and celebrating a shared identity."
