Keep a DUI off your wish list this season
Dec 12, 2024
(COLORADO) — 'Tis the season for sober rides. Starting Thursday, Dec. 12 the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) and other law enforcement agencies will be patrolling the streets and be on duty dedicated to arresting impaired drivers.
The Heat is On Holidays will begin Thursday and last through Christmas Day on Wednesday, Dec. 25. During this time, drivers may see saturation patrols, sobriety checkpoints, and additional law enforcement officers on duty.
As travel increases, there is a spike in impaired driving-related crashes and fatalities. So far in 2024, 30% of all traffic fatalities, 190, have involved an impaired driver.
Last December alone, law enforcement made 1,350 DUI arrests according to Col. Matthew C. Packard, chief of the Colorado State Patrol.
"Encourage your friends or family members to never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, too," Packard said. "Responsibility is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to driving sober."
If planning a party, CDOT and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) remind drivers to keep themselves and their loved ones safe with these tips:
Collect your guests' car keys upon arrival or encourage them to designate a driver, rideshare service, taxi, or public transportation.
Call a friend or family member for a guest if they have been drinking or offer them a place to stay if a sober ride home is unavailable.
Stop serving alcohol at least two hours before the party is over. Provide plenty of food and non-alcoholic drinks.
Be persistent if a guest is intoxicated and planning to drive home. Explain you care about their safety and cannot let them get behind the wheel.
Remember, as a host, you could be held liable if a guest you serve alcohol to gets in a crash.
"Keep a DUI off your wish list this holiday season," said CDOT’s Office of Transportation Safety Director Darrell Lingk. "If you plan to drink, plan a sober ride home. Use a rideshare service, taxi, designated driver, or public transit to get home safely. Just never drive impaired."
