INDIANAPOLIS — With a fleet of over 170 yellow trucks on state-maintained highways and interstates, the Indiana Department of Education will train its East Central District for winter weather Monday morning. According to a press release, while no salt or brine will be applied to the roads during this training, the exercise works as a way of getting INDOT drivers as prepared for winter as possible, running operations smoothly amid cold and snowy weather. It will take place between 10 a.m. and noon, INDOT said. "Our goal is to make sure crews and their trucks are ready to go when snow and ice arrives," said INDOT Winter Operations Manager Nick Evans. “It’s incredibly important that we take the time to adequately prepare our crews, equipment, and materials for the winter season.” Additionally, INDOT offered the following safety tips for drivers who plan to travel this winter: Adjust travel to road conditions, especially on roads covered with snow. Be prepared to slow down. "Don't crowd the plow" — never tailgate or drive beside a snowplow. According to INDOT, snowplow drivers may have limited visibility, so if you must pass them, do so carefully. In the case of a crash or becoming stranded, be prepared beforehand. Carry an emergency kit in your vehicle with items like food, water, a phone charger, sand/cat litter, flares/bright LED lights, a flashlight and blankets. Keep your vehicle in check. Make sure it's always full of gas, and regularly check your battery, fluids, tires and spares. Keep an eye on the weather, always checking local radars and reports.
