BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Bills are back from the bye and hosting the San Francisco 49ers for Sunday Night Football.
The team is hoping to have wide receiver Keon Coleman back from a wrist injury after he missed the game against Kansas City. The Bills rookie recently hosted his first solo community event, a coat giveaway for local kids. He says it’s the first of many on the way as he hosts his new charity.
“I think jump starting on the football side was a little bit first before I could really start to get acclimated with the community,” said Coleman. “But now that we got the first event, I look forward to a few more of these coming throughout the year and we’re gonna keep it going.”
The Keon Coleman Family Foundation’s mission statement is “empowering youth today for a brighter, more prosperous tomorrow.”
“Where I’m from, we didn’t have a professional team,” said Coleman. “So being able to be a guy that they look up to, watch every weekend on Sunday nights, Thursday nights, past their bedtime. Just being able to be here, live in person with them is, I think, a great experience.”
Coleman was a part of a nonprofit in his hometown that provides a safe space after school while helping kids build relationships and improve in the classroom.
“I grew up through Hope for Opelousas, wanting to go out there and play basketball every day,” said Coleman. “My siblings went through the same program, and I think it was just a great organization, nonprofit, to be able to give back to the kids that needed it. Needed the tutoring, needed the time to better socialize with other kids and all that outside of school.”
Little did he know back then he would go on to pro football success and, just recently, start his own charitable foundation.
“It allows me to give back in a bigger role,” said Coleman. “And you know, just showing my love for the Buffalo community for embracing me.”
