CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Thanksgiving can be one of the most dangerous times of the year when it comes to being on the road.
Ways to keep your pets safe on Thanksgiving
Across the country, drunk driving is the number one cause of death this time of year, and as loved ones come together to celebrate the holiday, the question remains how can we stop this tragedy?
"People drive like crazy out there, you never know just something could come out anywhere at any time but especially around this time," said Chris Sivard of Chicopee. "I try to be alert, maybe a little more so around these times."
Early Thursday morning, an Endicott College Police Seargent was killed in a wrong-way crash on I-95 in Newbury. Why the driver was traveling in the wrong direction is under investigation. A family now grieving, and the risk of the roads during the holidays is on high alert.
"If you got family and friends who can help you. If not, we're in the age of digital we have Uber and Lyft. There's really no excuse to do it these days and it's irresponsible, you don't want to hurt somebody," said Sivard.
Choosing to drive and ride responsibly is a part of the plan when consuming alcohol. Avoiding drunk driving means using rideshare like Lyft and Uber, which offer discounts on rides and fast pickups through their monthly membership plans, or at no cost.
Planning means designating a sober driver or catching a sober ride from a family or friend. If you see a suspicious driver on the road, call 9-1-1 immediately to report the driver.
Places like the city of Chicopee are reminding the community that the holidays are not the time to drive impaired. Putting not only everyone in the vehicle at risk, but also others on the road.
