FARMINGTON, N.M. (KRQE) – In October, the Farming Police Department had a chaotic morning when an emergency response situation ended with two people dead. Newly released body camera footage shows how it went from a break-in investigation to a double murder. On October 21, several Farmington officers were called to a home after a break-in was reported. They learned a man had kicked in the back door, stole a rifle, and took off. While investigating, they heard suspected gunshots. As they walked toward the gunshots, they came across a man in a field, begging for help. More gunfire was heard as they approached the man, and a body was discovered. The body was in front of the man's house, behind a car. The man was staying with the Whittenberg family, later during the investigation, the family helped identify the victim. Reports came out about a second shooting on East Main Street, and police said Whittenberg shot and killed Brent Francis while trying to steal a car. Deputies with the San Juan County Sheriff's Office took Whittenberg into custody and turned him over to the police department. Officers said he was acting erratic and attempted to question him. While waiting for a lawyer, he repeatedly talked to himself and accused police of trying to kill him. He also appeared to kick in the door and rip wires out of the wall. Police recovered numerous bullet casings, a handgun, a rifle, and a knife between the three crime scenes. Whittenberg is facing two counts of first-degree murder. He's scheduled to be arraigned on the charges Monday morning.
