CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- One Chesterfield family is wasting no time going all out with their Christmas decorations. Nearly 100,000 lights are making the Magnolia Green neighborhood in Chesterfield easy for Santa to spot. This kind of decorating is a family tradition that goes back decades.   Thanksgiving night kicked off the first official lighting of the Bottoms family's Christmas lights.   "We’ve become a part of a lot of family's traditions now," Emily Bottoms said.    It’s a multi-month long process -- the Bottoms said they started setting up in September.   "My wife allows me to do it," Hunter Bottoms joked.   The tradition started with Hunter’s dad and two siblings in 1995 in Brandermill. His dad wanted to win the Brandermill community decorating competition.   "We’d never win. Ever," he said. "Until we finally won which was pretty much a participation trophy.”   In 2014, they won USA Today’s best private light display, and it got so popular, they’d have to walk home from blocks away because of the number of cars causing traffic to see it. It got so big, Hunter decided to move the display to Magnolia Green.   "We have, you know, children now and they’re very proud of it," he said.  With their four daughters Brooklyn, 9, Skylar, 8, Haven, 5, and Remi, 3, working like little elves. “I think it’s very great," Skylar said. "I love having a dad like this.”   This is the third year they’ve partnered with Worthdays, a charity focused on local kids in the foster system. The Bottoms are competing with over 20 other houses and communities, and whoever raises the most money for Worthdays is the winner. One year, the Bottoms raised over $1,500.   "It’s cool to give back," he said. "My kids, I tell them about it, how lucky they are.”   The lights will be up all holiday season long.
