MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Days after 170 headstones were knocked over at a South Memphis cemetery, another family is coming forward with issues of their own. The family says New Park Cemetery has lost loved ones and misplaced names. They want the city to get involved. Dr. Karen Streeter says her family has been using this cemetery for generations, and call it a place to honor their ancestors. Fired employees blamed for 170 overturned headstones at Memphis cemetery She says while hearing around 170 headstones being knocked over by three fired employees this past week, her family had problems of their own. "We walked into the mausoleum and to our shock and dismay, our grandmother was nowhere to be found," she said. "The name was not there, we didn't know where she was." To top it off Streeter claims another family member was buried with a stranger. Families find Memphis cemetery in ruins She says she’s been going back and forth with management, but says problems still persist. "He would say each time I'm going to call you, he never called. So the last time I finally went up there when I heard about the debacle with the headstones," she said. It's why she is calling on the city to step in. "This is larger than the Streeter family. This is obviously something that is systematic with this particular cemetery and people need to know," she said. Cemetery managers say saturated ground caused problems WREG's Shay Arthur spoke with the cemetery's owner previously and said he hoped to have the knocked-over headstones back up by Christmas. That's the same timeline given to the Streeter family to fix their problems. "When we went we said, listen, we're going to have relatives here for Christmas and we want this completed by then and he said and he said I guarantee you it will be done," Streeter said. It's a promise Streeter hopes the owner keeps. Family questions state of graves at Whitehaven cemetery WREG asked the owner of New Park Cemetery why the employees were fired but the request was declined. The owner at this time has not pressed charges. The cemetery was not available for comment due to the holiday.
