Kansas City nonprofit focused on helping pets this holiday season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — While many people will be focused on what Christmas presents to purchase for their family on Black Friday, a Kansas City nonprofit wants you to think about your pets.
The Pet Resource Center of Kansas City is kicking off Pawlidays on Friday, November 29, which will run until New Year's Eve.
For this event, the nonprofit is offering up to $25 off pet vaccinations and spay and neuter services.
“This is kind of our Black Friday for pets," said Madison Brown, the marketing manager for the Pet Resource Center, which helps 40,000 animals each year in the Kansas City area. “One of the main reasons that we do this is we really want to help as many pets as possible.”

Since the Pet Resource Center started in the early 2000s, spaying and neutering has been their biggest mission. Brown said they're still seeing unwanted litters or owners who are in over their heads.
Those interested in taking advantage of this deal must sign up ahead of time as spots are filling up fast. You can utilize the organization's spay/neuter appointments here or their pet vaccinations here.
Another major event for the Pet Resource Center is their Santa Paws drive-thru clinic on Saturday, December 14, which gives dogs and cats a full set of vaccines at a discounted rate. It's $50 for dogs and $40 for cats.
“A full set of vaccines for dogs would be upwards of $200. So, you’re really getting quite the discount here," added Brown.
Additionally, it's even cheaper for puppies and kittens at $25.
As the name implies, pet owners don't even need to get out of their vehicles. A staff member will walk out to your car and take your pet inside to be vaccinated. The process should take about five minutes, but with more than 200 people taking advantage of the clinic last year the wait could be a little longer.
Additionally, each pet will get a free toy at the drive-thru clinic, which runs from 9 a.m. to noon on December 14.
“Please, if you have any toys or you’re out shopping for Black Friday, please stop by our clinic at 59th and Troost and drop them off," Brown added.
The only thing they ask is that you have your dog on a leash or your cat in a carrier. It doesn't matter where you live or what your financial situation is, anyone can take advantage of the clinic.
In order to provide these services, the nonprofit relies on donations. Their yearly fundraiser Tails of Hope is currently underway and will end December 31. It raised $95,000 in 2023, which allowed the Pet Resource Center to provide urgent care, dental care, emergency services, and spay and neuter services to families in need.
“It helps our urgent care especially because those owners aren’t planning for this. They don’t know that their pets are going to get loose and get hit by a car or that their cat's going to get in a fight with a neighborhood dog, you know? They don’t plan for this stuff," Brown said.
A few donors have offered to match the 2023 goal, so the nonprofit said every donation made between now and the end of the year will be matched up to $95,000.

Kristin Roth, the CEO for the Pet Resource Center said, “Almost every day we’re seeing somebody who had never heard of us before and was so glad they found us so they could get that pet their rabies shot, get them spayed or neutered, or get on our pet food pantry to receive food each month.”
